WHERE YOU CAN SPOIL YOUR FEATHERED KIDS (FIDS)!

OUR PET BIRDS ARE LIKE FAMILY MEMBERS (FIDS-FEATHERED KIDS)

I'M A BIG BIRD LOVER & HAVE MANY & THEIR HEALTH IS IMPORTANT

BIRD NUTRITION FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH

Food pyramid for Birds that tends to keep our pet birds healthy.

5-10% Healthy Seeds & Nuts

5-10% Healthy Table Foods including Well Cooked Meats

10-20% Healthy Sprouts Mix

10% Leafy Greens & Red, Yellow and Green Vegetables

10% Healthy Fresh Fruits

40-60% A Well Balanced Pellet Blend-I use an organic cold pressed pellet. THIS PRESERVES THE NUTRIENTS & VITAMIN SO THEY ARE NOT DESTROYED BY A HOT EXTRUDING PROCESS.

Foods to avoid - Alcohol, Apple seeds, Avocados, Beans (Dried or Under Cooked), Caffeine, Celery, Chocolate, Garlic, Junk Food, Peanuts, Shellfish, Stone Fruit Pits, Raw Dairy Of Any Kind, Raw Mushrooms, Raw Onions, Rhubarb, Salt, Tomatoes Leaves and under-cooked Meats.

Remove fresh foods after 2-3 hours to avoid Bacterial contamination.

Pellet Based Diet

As avian experts studied nutrition, they have found that seed only diets contained too much fat and in turn, were likely to result in fatty liver disease and quite possibly, early death. Pelleted foods is a rather recent innovation in bird nutrition and provides birds with the optimal nutrition they require. Pellets often also contain added vitamins and minerals. You may read on many seed diet packaging that they are vitamin and mineral enriched. These "supplements" are usually sprayed on and when the seeds are hulled....... you guessed it, those good vitamins, etc. end up on the floor of the cage.Pellet based diets are balanced nutrition and contain a much wider variety of ingredients than seed diets. If your bird has been on a seed diet, it is never too late to convert him or her over to a pellet based diet.  (See link below for a free PDF report on converting from a seed to a pellet based diet)

One last word about bird diets. If you will take note, I have used the term, "pellet-based" and not pellet diet. Pellets are a source of protein and feeding a 100% pellet diet is too much protein, such as seed diets are too much fat. Too much protein for birds is likely to damage the kidneys. I feed my own birds a cold pressed organic pellet based diet as well as generous amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables. I frequently make for them a nice birdie mash and add to it at the completion of the cooking the following in various combinations: frozen - mixed vegetables, kale, green beans, peas, broccoli, mango, papaya, blueberries, and squash. By doing this you take a wonderfully nutritious food and kick it up many notches on the healthy scale.  Below is a great link for a free PDF copy on how to convert your bird from a seed based diet to a pellet based diet from birdtricks.com

BIRD FORAGING TO PREVENT BOREDOM

Wild birds spend about 1/3 to 2/3 of their day foraging for food which is one thing our companion pet birds generally do not get to do. That is why it is so very important to keep them used to foraging for food even if it's simply hiding some food all over their cage or bird room. Also having some food in several locations not just sitting in a single bowl. Keep your birds stimulated with plenty of ways for them to get their food. To get them started foraging you can even start by simply covering their food bowl with a piece of paper with a tear in it then gradually make it harder by eliminating the tear then move to putting a string or rubber band holding the paper in place with a tear in it then no hole next.  Wrap an almond or pine nut in paper and put it in their bowl. This will help keep them from destructive behaviors. They don't have to be expensive foraging wheels like the one in the picture. You can make them yourself with bird safe things around the house. This link will give you several places to get some great and creative ideas for what you can do to make your own DIY foraging toys. https://www.google.com/search?q=www.google/pictures+DIY+foraging+toys

Sally Blanchard has a great website you can check out here about bird foraging in their natural & wild environment.

PLAYTIME/TRICK TRAINING AND TOYS ARE CRITICAL FOR STIMULATION, OPTIMAL HEALTH AND GOOD BEHAVIOR

I  can't stress this enough, even though diet attributes to roughly 30% of bad bird behavior the remaining portion is due to boredom and inactivity. We must keep our FIDS occupied with activities to prevent them from bad destructive behaviors. This can be done with training tricks as well as with toys. Toys play a key role in keeping our FIDS occupied especially if they spend a good deal of time alone while we are at work. Many people think toys are more for decorations and playing and get upset when the FIDS destroy the toys they just paid good money for. But that is exactly what they are supposed to do. It keeps them busy for hours. Another thing we need to do is keep rearranging the cage/bird room so that it's a new place for them which is another thing that keeps them from destructive behaviors and keeps them stimulated. Natalie Stilwell, DVM, MS, PhD, said in the April 14, 2018 edition of the American Veterinarian. "Researchers in Brazil found that providing enrichment significantly decreases certain abnormal behaviors in macaws, such as pacing and excessive preening. Chronic stress and boredom can lead to negative behavior in captive parrots, such as feather picking, aggression, and stereotypies. Therefore, most avian behaviorists recommend various forms of environmental enrichment (EE) to improve physical and mental well-being."

If you are NOT a DIY'er making your own toys there are several places to buy them. One place I like that has an all natural toy line by planet pleasures that they automatically ship out based on your bird's size. They ship them on a monthly or whatever monthly basis frequency you want . No worries they just come automatically. Check out their link below.

PLANET PLEASURES ALL NATURAL BIRD TOYS BASED ON BIRD SIZE

I highly recommend you keep a constant supply of toys on hand to change things up on a regular basis also so you don't have to wait for an order or run out for more toys when the FIDS destroy them faster than anticipated. I always keep any broken or disassembled toy parts from the toys the FIDS destroy to make your own DIY toys and add extra parts like oyster shells, wood chunks, whole shelled nuts drilled with a hole, buttons, coconut husks, coconut shell chunks, beads, shells, corn cob chunks, bamboo chunks, leather disks as well as any bird safe items.

Planet Pleasures Bird Toys Creatively made of earth-friendly materials that birds encounter in the wild with an intentionally balanced design ... they are destructible, yet durable.

BIRD FREE ENVIRONMENT. Buy without worry.

These toys are perfect for parrots that love to destroy things ... but not quickly, leaving your friend bored and looking for more inappropriate things to chew on like your furniture! Many of the toys are made of materials that contain calcium and minerals (cuttlebone and oyster shell) for the health of your bird.

BIRD TRAINING KEEPS BIRDS STIMULATED & HELPS WITH BONDING & IN MY OPINION-THE BEST LINK FOR TRAINING

If you or your bird needs some help I know there are many places to get training but who I use and I know that you can contact them. Dave Womack and his wife Jamieleigh and Chet Womack (Dave's Brother). They are tops in their field and they love their large flock and have trained all of them. They do trick training for better behaved birds, potty training, talking on que training as well as freestyle flight training. You name it and I think they can do it. They provide private consultations as well.

Dave's Resume and Training speaks for itself.

I would highly recommend taking advice from professional bird trainers. Below is who I use and they have a ton of free stuff on YouTube and their blogs for tips and tricks.

We all need to be careful in how we respond to our birds behavior because sometimes we unknowingly re-enforce a bad behavior.  In addition to his career as an illusionist, Dave also spends much of his time training parrots for celebrities, touring shows, and theme parks - while simultaneously producing high quality training products for the average bird owner - which has now officially become The World's Leading Parrot Training Course(s). These people have saved me from a great deal of frustration and saved my relationship with my birds. In my book they are life savers. They have a ton of things to help with just about any issue.I know some folks don't like trick training but it's not about doing tricks but rather building a bond or trust with your FID'd I have used several of their training videos. Training really helps you and your FID's bond. Check them out. The link is for overall training and understanding how and why to do it. It is a two hour video for only 19.95. Dave & Jamieleigh performed with Ringling Brothers Circus and Cruise ships, they have trained several proffesional magician's birds like David Copperfield. I think hey are tops in their field. You can be the judge of that though.. You can even face book questions to them and they try to answer all of them or email them at info@birdtricks.com

RECOMMENDED HARDWARE, WOOD PERCHES AND CHEW COINS

I WILL ONLY USE STAINLESS STEEL HARDWARE (WINGNUTS,HANGER BOLTS, WASHERS, WIRE AND CHAINS), AS I FEEL THIS IS THE SAFEST FOR BIRDS. I FEEL IT IS NOT WORTH THE RISK TO EXPOSE OUR FIDS TO OTHER CHEAPER METALS.

Zinc is most often used and so is chrome but with birds that love to chew I am afraid to take the chance that some will come off especially the chrome and galvanized metals.  It might cost a little bit more but it sure is a lot cheaper than an expensive vet bill or not to mention the potential loss of a wonderful companion and the cost of a replacement bird.

NATURAL WOOD PERCHES ARE GOOD FOR YOUR BIRDS AS WELL. I LIKE TO OFFER A VARIETY OF WOODS FOR PERCHING, CHEWING AND GNAWING.

BOTTLE BRUSH TREE, CITRUS TREE, YUCCA PLANT, YELLOW PINE TREE,  AUSTRALIAN PINE TREE, CORN PLANT, BAMBOO, SHEFFLERA TREE, MAHOGANY TREE, ROYAL POINCIANA TREE, SEA GRAPE TREE, PALM TREE WOOD AND FROND STEMS, PANDANUS TREE, FLORIDA HOLLY TREE, MANGO TREE, PAPAYA TREE, CRAPE MYRTLE TREE AND OAK TREE WITH BARK REMOVED.

As you know parrots may chew on almost anything they get their beaks on. There are probably many purposes for this chewing, only some of which we can guess at. Chewing and tearing apart items is a great way for a parrot to play with and investigate an object. Wild parrots often chew on branches, leaves, husks, etc., shredding them into small pieces that they drop to the ground. I believe chewing on wood helps a parrot keep its beak in good shape. I often give my parrots things to chew on for enrichment, exercise, and to help keep their beaks clean and well-coped.

THE FAMILY FRIENDLY PARROT FORMULA

THE FAMILY FRIENDLY PARROT FORMULA

"The Family Friendly Parrot Formula" Video Course

Dave & Jamieleigh Womach travel the world coaching private clients how to work with their wild, biting, screaming parrots; and turn them into loving pets that the entire family can interact with.

They have never publicly shared their Simple 12 Step Parrot Program that they refer to as the Family Friendly Parrot Formula, until now!

They somewhat-jokingly refer to this as the "12 Step Program for Parrots" because if you're like most people, you've been denying the fact that you have a problem at all. The first step is to admit that your parrot isn't the perfect household pet (yet), and that you're ready for him to become a Family Friendly Parrot.

Does your parrot:

• Bite you for no reason?

• Refuse to train because it doesn't like treats?

• Only like one member of your family, and wants KILL the rest?

• Scream NON-STOP for your attention?

If you answered yes to ANY of those questions, they have the solution for you!

• In this video they reveal why "Every interaction is a training session," whether you like it or not. You are increasing the likelihood for good behavior, or decreasing it - and how to set yourself up for success.

• You'll discover what Opportunistic Training is and why not being aware of this can be detrimental to ever having a well behaved parrot... ever.

• They show you what The Reset is and why it's such a powerful way to get your bird to focus on you, so you can actually train it!

• In the past, training sessions have been limited to 2-5 minutes. However, in this single video they teach you a secret that they use that allows you to train all day long!

• You'll be shocked to discover how often you're currently accidentally punishing your parrot, and how to focus on using positive reinforcement.

• They illustrate in the simplest and clearest way ever, how using negative reinforcement can actually improve your relationship with your parrot in as little as 1 training session through our Power Pause Technique.

• You'll learn how to use food to motivate your parrot, without starving her, even if your bird doesn't currently like treats!

• And much, much more!

Don't let your parrot control your life any longer! Take action, and get the Family Friendly Parrot Formula now!

PALM NUTS & PANDANUS KERNELS

A favorite treat for parrots

Palm Nuts &  Pandanus kernels/keys are an irresistible, nutritious and sweet tasting natural food. They provide good levels of Vitamin E (which enhances the immune system), magnesium (which aids in nutrient delivery), Vitamin A, beta carotene. They provide other vitamins and mineral as well as Omega 3 fatty acids, all of which are essential for optimal bird health.  Not to mention the foraging activity will help replicate what parrots do in their natural habitat.

Palm Nuts should be stored frozen, to prepare simply remove 1 or 2 at a time and place in a fridge to thaw overnight, or leave out for a period during the day. Then rinse and hand them over to your Parrot to spend hours going after the seed inside the nut. The high oil content of Palm Nuts means you can refreeze them on receipt. Freezing the palm nuts only affects to coloring of the skin making it a bit darker than it was before it was frozen without affecting the taste or quality of the palm nuts or Pandanus kernels/keys. They can be frozen for long storage times as long as a year or more.

Unless you have a wild caught bird or one that already likes to forage you might need to help encourage your pet birds to dig into these wonderful morsels by cracking a few open for them or crushing them a bit in a vice or sawing them in half (please be very careful not to cut yourself) but once they figure out there is a nice meaty seed inside they will relentlessly chew at them to get to that treat. Whether it is a Fan Palm, Christmas Palm, Canary Date Palm, Queen Palm, Foxtail Palm,  or Pandanus (Screw Pine Palm) Fruit, your birds will love them. They can be eaten green or ripe and anywhere in between.

Due to Hurricane Irma, Macaw Palm and Attelea Palm fruit are not longer available.

See Pictures below of the many types available.

PALM FRUIT/NUT HARVEST PROCESS BEFORE IT GETS TO YOU

WE ONLY HARVEST FOR WHAT WE HAVE ORDERS FOR. ONLY WHEN SEASON ENDS WILL WE HARVEST FOR FUTURE SALES

WE HARVEST PALM FRUITS BY HAND, CUTTING DOWN ONE STALK OF FRUIT AT A TIME OFTEN FROM A TALL LADDER. EACH STALK CAN WEIGH UP TO 100 POUNDS. ONCE THEY FALL THE 10-30 FEET WE THEN HAND PICK EACH NUT OFF OF THE STALKS AND STEMS ONE AT A TIME.

THE SEVERAL STEPS IN OUR CLEANING PROCESS ARE, 1ST-RINSE DIRT OFF WITH A FRESH WATER PRESSURE SPRAY

WE SPRAY WATER OVER THE NUTS FOR SEVERAL MINUTES AND CONTINUALLY MOVE THEM AROUND WHILE HOSING THEM OFF WITH A SPRAY NOZZLE.

2ND WE DO AN HOUR SOAK IN A BIG TUB TO SOFTEN ANY FOREIGN MATERIAL STUCK ON NUTS FROM WILD BIRDS

WHILE THE NUTS ARE SOAKING WE PADDLE THEM AROUND TO KEEP THEM MOVING TO GET OFF ANY WILD BIRD MATERIAL THROUGH MOVEMENT AND FRICTION BEFORE TUB IS DRAINED FOR ANOTHER RINSING BEFORE THE ACV CLEANING SOLUTION SOAK.

3RD WE DO AN HOUR SOAK IN A BIG TUB WITH AN APPLE CIDER VINEGAR SOLUTION TO DISINFECT THE NUTS

WHILE THE NUTS ARE SOAKING IN THE ACV CLEANING SOLUTION  WE PADDLE THEM AROUND TO KEEP THEM MOVING TO ENSURE THE CLEANING SOLUTION HITS ALL AREAS OF THE NUTS BEFORE THE TUB IS DRAINED FOR ANOTHER RINSING BEFORE THE FINAL FRESH WATER SOAK.

4TH WE DO A FINAL FRESH WATER PRESSURE SPRAY RINSE AND THEN A FINAL ONE HOUR SOAK IN NEW FRESH WATER

WHILE THE NUTS ARE SOAKING IN THE FINAL WATER BATH WE PADDLE THEM AROUND TO KEEP THEM MOVING TO ENSURE THE CLEANING SOLUTION GETS RINSED OFF ALL AREAS OF THE NUTS BEFORE THE TUB IS DRAINED AND THE NUTS REMOVED TO DRY BEFORE FREEZING AND PACKING AND SHIPPING THEM OUT TO YOU.

5TH & FINAL STEP IS TO FREEZE THE NUTS 24 HOURS BEFORE PACKING THEM & SENDING THEM OFF TO YOUR FIDS

PALM NUTS SHOULD BE STORED FROZEN AS THEY WILL KEEP FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME. THE HIGH OIL CONTENT OF PALM NUTS MEANS THAT YOU CAN REFREEZE THEM AFTER YOU RECEIVE YOUR SHIPMENT WITH OUT AFFECTING THE QUALITY OR THE TASTE OF THE NUTS. THE COLORS DARKEN A BIT BUT THAT IS IT.

I HAVE EXPERIMENTED WITH DEFROSTING AND REFREEZING THEM SEVERAL TIMES WITH NO ILL EFFECTS TO THE FRUIT/NUTS. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE REALLY RIPE FRUIT THE PULP GETS A LITTLE MUSHY. THAT'S WHY I TRY NOT TO HARVEST OVERLY RIPE FRUIT.

palm fruit is harvested based on previous weeks orders

I don't ship out palm fruit on Thurs thru Saturday because even if I deliver your boxes to the P.O. first thing in the morning they don't count that day aspart of the 2-3 day delivery time for priority mail and so I don't want the palm fruit sitting in a hot truck or warehouse over the weekend.

I also harvest the palm fruit for orders from the previous week so you get them as fresh as possible. So it usually takes about a week before you receive your palm fruit/nuts.

If your FIDs are new to palm fruit/nuts make sure you review this information on how to introduce them to your FIDs.

Whether it is a Fan Palm, Christmas Palm, Canary Date Palm, Queen Palm, Foxtail Palm,  or Pandanus (Screw Pine Palm) Fruit your birds will love them. They can be eaten green or ripe and anywhere in between.

INTRODUCE FIDS TO PALM NUTS-THEY CAN BE EATEN GREEN TO RIPE

1ST TRY PUTTING A VARIETY OF WHOLE NUTS IN HIS TREAT BOWL

YOU CAN REMOVE ONE OR TWO NUTS FOR EACH OF YOUR FIDS BY SIMPLY TAKING THEM OUT THE NIGHT BEFORE AND PLACING THEM IN THE REFRIGERATOR OR TAKE THEM OUT AND PUT IN A BOWL OF WARM WATER THE DAY OF USE. ONCE THEY ARE DEFROSTED SIMPLY RINSE THEM OFF AND PAT THEM DRY AND HAND THEM OVER TO YOUR FIDS.

WATCH TO SEE WHAT HE/SHE DOES WITH THEM

IF YOUR FID IS NOT SURE WHAT TO DO YOU CAN HELP THEM OUT BY PARTIALLY STRIPING THE FRUIT PULP OFF THEN IF NO INTEREST STILL THEN PARTIALLY CRACK THEM FOR THEM UNTIL THEY FIGURE OUT THERE IS A TASTY AND MEATY MORSEL IN THE MIDDLE THEN ONCE THEY HAVE THAT FIGURED OUT YOU ARE HOME FREE.

EVEN THE BIG FOXTAIL PALM NUTS CAN BE EATEN BY SMALLER PARROTS

FOXTAIL PALM NUTS DO NOT HAVE A HARD SHELL LIKE A WALNUT BUT RATHER A FIBROUS LAYER PROTECTING THE SEED WHICH CAN BE WIDDLED AWAY BY CONURES, CAIQUES, RING NECKS AND SIMILAR SIZED BIRDS
